Subdued tones dominate mantel decorations at the Theta sorority at the University of Oklahoma. A gold-toned painting is flanked by antique candelabra and a small pair of lions. Facing the mantel, blue porcelain and hydrangeas, accompanied by a pair of French candlesticks, comprise a simple tablescape.

An antique Regency marble fireplace in my living room displays some of my favorite belongings. A pair of blue-and-white export porcelain vases and a pair of candlesticks of kneeling blackamoor figures flank a lovely ormolu clock. Above, an impressionistic still life painting is a much-loved possession that has hung in many of my homes as well as in my sister’s home, and has even served occasional decorating stints in the homes of friends.
